New Route To A Healthy Heart
The Boston Globe said in an editorial:
Time and again, researchers have offered tips for warding off life-threatening diseases by suggesting that we eat certain foods or avoid others, or take this hormone supplement but not that one. Much of this advice is based on incomplete experimentation, and sometimes it doesnt hold up when better work is done. Lately, scientists have focused on a new villain in our blood, homocysteine, and are proposing that we keep it at healthy levels by passing up animal protein and getting more of the B vitamins.
Chastened, perhaps, by the recent finding that a high-fiber diet does not in fact protect against colon cancer, researchers are less emphatic than they might once have been in calling for dietary changes to keep homocysteine down. What they do know is that high levels of this amino acid, a product in the bodys breakdown of protein, are associated with arterial disease. Still to be proven is that eating less animal protein or more vitamin B6, B12, or folate (another B vitamin) will actually reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease.
While the jury is still out on that count, the evidence of the benefit of folate (also known as folic acid) in preventing birth defects is so strong that for the past two years bread, pasta and cereals have been fortified with it under a mandate from the US Food and Drug Administration. In addition, homocysteine has been linked to miscarriages, Alzheimers disease, strokes, and osteoporosis.
All of this builds a strong case for eating foods rich in folate or vitamin B6: asparagus, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, orange juice, bananas, avocados, wheat germ, lentils, oatmeal, chicken, and egg yolks. The last two items on the list show that dispensing with animal proteins altogether is tricky, especially since vitamin B12 is found only in liver and other meats, fish, eggs, and milk. Vitamin supplements are an alternative.
Not to be forgotten is the meditation factor. A study at Ohio State University shows that stress can raise homocysteine levels. The message is simple: yoga and yolks. Now if only someone would invent an egg with a low cholesterol content.

Still Sexy at Any Age
... Trot out the red lipstick, practice that slinky walk and drag those high heels and slit skirts from the closet -- it's time to play sex kitten. Or so says sex therapist Anne Hooper, and she insists it has nothing to do with age, shape or size. Hooper, author of The.Great.Sex.Guide(Dorling Kindersley, 1999), says that if you don wraparound clothes and daub on the brilliant red lipstick, "you are already halfway to being a sex kitten." Men, she adds, "respond to visual signals, regardless of how fat or thin you are." Practice walking across a room, and "think sexy as you move one leg in front of the other," she says. "Show off as much leg as possible, accentuated with gleaming nylon, high heels and a sexy slit skirt" -- in other words, the "Jerry Hall effect." Hooper says the most important point is to "believe you are attractive, because you tend to be as attractive as you think you are." This, she explains, "is why some women who are less than physically beautiful continue to attract men well into their old age."

" Adjuvant systemic therapy: What is it? "
... Adjuvant systemic therapy can be thought of as a type of insurance policy — a backup plan, just in case things don't go as hoped. In this case what you are insuring against is the chance that your initial treatment for breast cancer may not have removed all cancerous cells from your body. www.mayoclinic.com

Bedrest is Worthless !
... November 1, 1999 BALTIMORE (Johns Hopkins) - Blame it on the Victorian era and its doctors. The notion that bedrest - taking to one's bed - is a good way to deal with illness is still very much with us. And it may be doing a lot of harm A recent comprehensive study in a leading medical journal confirmed what some doctors have suspected: that in many cases bedrest is worthless and may actually be damaging to the body It's because of gravity. Laying horizontal for long periods is something like floating weightless in space, with similar effects. After one week of strict bedrest the body can lose up to 20 percent of its muscle mass. It takes twice that long to get it back "You not only have muscle losses, you have cardiovascular changes. Your heart rate goes up, your blood pressure can drop You lose a lot of fluid volume. A lot of your plasma disappears When you get up again, you can pass out, you can faint," says Dr Christine Kaspar, an expert on the subject at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Dr. Kaspar says for those who must slow down for health reasons sitting in a chair is often a better bet than hitting the sack Copyright 1999 The Johns Hopkins University.
