STARTING YOUR OWN WALKING CLUB

First of all... ANYTHING worth doing, is worth doing, ACTIVELY.
THEN,

Make a flyer about starting a walking club and list the benefits of walking, etc.
Set a safe public place to meet.
list a contact phone number on the flyer for people to get hold of you, or simply say where the meeting will be held and for them to bring a friend.
Take the flyer around to local apartment complexes, homes in your neighborhood, colleges, or put them on any local bulletin boards you may find. You can also put flyers on trees and/or poles along common walking paths.
Always take advantage of the walkablock.com website by referring your new members to it for health information.
Prospective members will appreciate that they are a part of this whole American Walking Club on a National level.
Another way of getting the word out is that in some cities the local newspaper will allow you to put your club meeting schedule in their community section forFree (The Community Calendar ??)

At the meeting
Start a roster list going around for people to put their names and phone numbers as well as their times available to walk. Then make copies of that list and pass the list out to each prospective member. This gives each person a list of people to call and the availability of those people.
Be sure to ask everyone to bring a friend or an acquaintance to the next meeting.
Follow-up on new members before the next meeting. Get them involved. It will go a long way.

Always plan your next meeting date or have set meetings so everyone knows the plan.
It is not mandatory to attend meetings to be a member but if you want any say in the life of the club I suggest you/they be there.

Communication is key to success.

If your first meeting or so only has a couple of new members, 'that is fine', It always seems to work that way. Slow at first then, watch out, it grows before you know it. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED

Start club events right away. Plan things right now and follow through.

Remember,... The meetings are for fun, making friends and getting healthy
Here are some suggestions on, How to run your meetings:

(1)  The club should be for walking, and walking activities, not just having meetings
(2)  Keep it short but goal oriented
(3)  Decide what you want to call the club and when to walk.
(4)   Decide what type of walking/hiking functions you want to do in the future, ie. weekend excursions  walks in the city, country walks, trekking through the zoo, mall walking, charity walks etc., Individuals walking together, by themselves or planned functions.
(5)   Set club officers to be selected or elected at the next meeting, eg. Pres., Vice Pres. Treasurer, Public Relations Advisor, Secretary (keep minutes), Event Investigator/coordinator, etc.(always looking for things to get the club involved in)
(6)   Get to know each other and have fun.
(7)   Spread well being in the community.
(8)   Put a smile on some ones face today…
(9)   Keep in mind your personal health now and for the future.
FYI, Activity is like a savings account. If you go out, walk and be active, that activity will be like money/health in the bank, the better the quality of life you create for yourself now will help maintain your ability for good health in your future.
Get results now by getting started.
Your body will save up your health like money in the bank.
